BIHS Hypertension Specialist Accreditation Scheme

Championing Excellence in Hypertension Care

The British and Irish Hypertension Society (BIHS) is developing the Hypertension Specialist Accreditation Scheme - a national framework to recognise and promote excellence in hypertension care across the UK and Ireland.

This scheme has been developed in response to the absence of a clear, trusted register of specialist centres and physicians in hypertension. Its aim is to provide reassurance to patients, clarity to referring clinicians, and a benchmark for those commissioning services.

Phase 1: In Development

Phase 1 of the scheme will accredit:

  • Specialist Hypertension Centres meeting defined clinical and service standards
  • Individual Hypertension Specialist Physicians with advanced training and experience

A robust review process involving expert panels will ensure consistency and quality. Successful applicants will be listed on a nationally recognised register, helping to shape future policy, training, and commissioning decisions.

Phase 2: Coming Soon

The second phase will extend the scheme to include other clinical practitioners delivering expert hypertension care outside of secondary and tertiary centres.

Why Accreditation Matters:

  • Provides assurance of quality to patients and the public
  • Recognises clinical excellence and advanced training
  • Helps shape NHS policy, education, and service planning
  • Supports equitable access to specialist hypertension care
  • Builds national and international leadership in the field

The scheme is not yet live, but all foundational work is complete. Application forms, reviewer guidance, and timelines will be published later this year.
