It was with great sadness that the BIHS learned of Mark’s sudden and unexpected death last week.

Mark trained in pharmacology and clinical medicine at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, qualifying in 2002. After clinical posts in Cambridge and Nottingham, he undertook a PhD in Clinical Pharmacology with Dr Kevin O’Shaughnessy, in Cambridge, addressing the molecular mechanisms which regulate sodium trafficking in the distal nephron and which contribute to hypertension. He completed his specialist training in Clinical Pharmacology in Cambridge in 2013 and then took up a prestigious MRC Clinician Scientist post in Nottingham and took over the local hypertension service.

Mark was an active member of the Society, winning several prizes, including the Young Investigator Award in 2008 and 2009, and well-deserved trips to present his research in Australia, where several family members live.

He served on the Executive Committee between 2018 and 2021, and, up until his death, was an active member of the Guidelines Committee.

He also served on the NICE Hypertension Guideline Committee, contributed to several textbooks and presented his work at many meetings in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. He will be much missed.
